BpTYesterday we did up to heavenly section and that covered all the
way up to Satyaloka. So we have seem Brahma's position. He is
actually very very elevated. On this universe Brahma is actually
the ggreatest devotee. Brahma is also the head of our
paramparah. He received the knowledge directly from Krsna, the
Vedas or knowledge about Krsna was revealed in the heart of
Brahma at the beginning. But although Brahma is such an exalted
devotee, but still Brahma felt that he was not the greatest
recipeient of Krsna's mercy. Brahma, in comparison to Lord Siva
........(banging noises) as I mentioned earlier is the uniquie
quality of a devotee. A devotee is nirmatsa, parama nirmatsa....
Actually of all the scriptures Srimad Bhagavatam is exclusively
meant for pure devotion. Srimad Bhagavatam is amalpurana, the
scriputre that is free from all material contamination. And the
qualification to understand or even enter into the realm of
Srimad Bhagavatam is that the person must be totally nonenvious.
Parama nitmatsa..... Then only vedam.......unmuliman, then only
becomes qualified to understand the SPG. In the very beginning
of Srimad Bhagavatam there is a warning is given that if you want
to become a devotee, if you want to understand the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, you must become totally free from envy.
And we are seeing that in Narada Muni's search of the greatest
devotee. One quality of all the devotees stands out most
brilliantly and that is their nonenviousness. A person who is
nonenvious he only can see others superior to him. This is not
a blind glorification, this is actually based on proper
philosophical and rtational understanding. No one is blindly or
rationlessly pointing out someone else to be a great devotee,
they are giving valid reasons why those personalities are
greater devotees. So we saw that qualitiy in the brahamana in
Prayag. The brahmana said 'No, I am not a devotee. What kind of
greatness did you see in me. I am just a brahmana and therefore
I am performing my duties of a brahamana but if you want to see a
real devotee then go and see the king in the south of inida, he
is a real devotee'. And the brahmana explained why he was a
great devotee. and then he went to the king and the king didn't
accept Narada Muni's` recognition of him as a great devotee. He
said, 'No. The residents of the heavenly planets are far superior
to us and of them Indra is the greatest.' Then he went to Indra
and Indra also did not accept the glorifications from Narada and
he pointed out to Brahma and Brahma when he heard Narada
glorififying him, according to Brahma those glorification were
inappropriate therefore Brahma chastised him. He said 'How many
times to I have to tell you that I am not the Supreme, that I am
not the creator, I am not the Supreme Controller. I have been
telling you since you were a boy. You had the same misconception
since a young age and time and time again I have to chastise you
and still you didn't learn'. In this way he chastised Narada
Muni and he established the position of the SPG clear to Narada.
That Narada Krsna is the SPG, He is the supreme powerful, He is
is the Supreme Creator and He is the Supreme Maintainer. I am
just a servant of the servant of the servant. Then Brahma told
him that if you really are searching for a devotee, then go to
Lord Siva. And Siva is a greater devotee because of these, these
reasons, and he mentioned the reasons in comparison to his own
position. Like when he gives benedictions to demons and those
demons create disturbance to the Lord, and His creation and His
devotees, then Krsna chastises Brahma but he doesn't do that to
Lord Siva. Lord Siva although he gives benedictions and although
he makes mistakes, even Lord Siva fights with Krsna in order to
support his followers, but still Krsna doesn't take any offense
because Krsna treats Lord Siva as His friend and because Lord
Siva ia the greatest devotee. And then Brahma told Narada you go
out of this material universe, you go out of the seven layers of
this material universe and you go to Sivaloka and you meet him
there and he is the greatest devotee. So Narada immediately went
to see Lord Siva. As I also mentioned earlier, Narada has a very
wonderful ability that he can go anywqhere in no time. It is a
kind of siddhi. And not only can he tgravel in the amterial
nature, he can even gpo beyond the material nature and go to the
spiritual sky. He has access even up to Vrndavana and in the
second part of BB we will see how Narada is present everywhere.
Wherever Krsna is present, Narada is there. And Gopakumar, the
hero of the second part of BB, he once expressed his surprise
that 'Narada how come I find you everywhere, wherever the Lord is
youa re there'. ANd Narada gave the explanation that we will
discuss later on. Narada Muni with his wonderful ability went to
Sivaloka. ANd when he went to Sivaloka he saw that Lord Siva was
singing the glory of Sankarshana. He was meditating on
Sankarshana, he was singing His glory and in ecstacy he is
dancing. So this glorification or worshipping of Sankarshana by
Lord Siva has been described in the fifth canto of the Srimad
Bhagavatam. This is alos another important consideration, that
this Brhad Bhagavatam is actually the essence of Srimad
Bhagavatams. As I mentioned earlier there are two Bhagavatamrta.
One is laghu and the other is brhad. The laghu Bhagavatamrta has
been written by Srila Rupa Goswami and Brhad Bhagavatam has been
written by Srila Sanatan Goswami. Laghu Bhagavatam actually
gives the essence of Srimame by the churning of the milk
ocean, similarly by churning the ocean of Srimad Bhagavatam, the
Brhad Bhagavatam has come out, the nectar of Bhagavat. AS I was
saying everything that has been mentioned in Brhad Bhagavtamrta
has it's relevant justification in Srimad Bhagavatam. Nothing is
concoction, everything is factual, whatever has been mentioned in
Brhad Bhagavatam. As Tamal Krishna Goswami was mentioning this
morning that the scriptures is actually revealed in the hearts
oif pure devotees. It is not that concoct something, that they
imahgine something, those facts are rfevealed in their heartsd.
In the previous scriptures there may have been a mention in the
form of sutra or in the form of some indication or in the form of
some aphorism, but those aphorisms are revealed in the hearts of
the devotees. In this respect I remember when Maharaj was
mentioning it in the class one incident. After Srila
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's disappearance some of his
leading devotees started to find discrepencies in his writings
and as a result of that they were actually leaders of Gaudiya
Math after Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura left this
planet and they even took his books and dumped them in the
Ganges. And when some other senior devotees approached them and
asked them about that they said that there were a lot of things
that were not mentioned in the scriptures. Bhaktisiddhanta
Sarasvati Thakura wrote and said many things that were not
mentioned in the scriptures. So those who were sincerely
adhering to Srila BST's teachings they asked whether they accept
SBT as a pure devotee and then they pointed out that if they
accept him as a pure devotee, then whatever comes out of him is a
scripture. Even though you may not find the appropriate
verifications in the previous scriptures, but whatever comes out
of the heart of a pure devotee is the scripture. WE can see how
the Vedas were revealed, they were revealed in the heart of
Brahma and why do we accept, because Brahma is a pure devotee.
Then there are further elaborations. Actually Bhaktivinode
Thakura gave a very nice example in this respect. He said just
as a lotus gradually blossoms into a fully bloomed flower,
similarly in the begnminning we find the lotus as a bud, we see
the bud of the lotus. When it was revealed in Brahma the flower
of devotion was almost closed. It was just an undetectable bud
but through Prahlada we see that the gradually the bud of
devotion is unfolding and then finally through gradually through
time and the development of devotion, the bud was blossoming.
And then finally with SCM and the Goswami's that flower of
devotion has become fully bloomed. This is how we have to
apprach the scriptures. If someone questions where did Sanatana
Goswami get this from then our answer to that is that do we
accept Santana Goswami as a pure devotee? If we do then what
ever came from Sanatana Goswami is scripture. And then we can go
back and if we have the ability we can veriffy Sanatana Goswami's
teachings from the Vedas and we will find the verification and
justification from the scriptuires. In this way Ramanuja Acarya
explained that every single verse of Bhagavadgita is there in
the scriptures. So this is how the great acaryas can unfold, and
they can show that actually nothing is concoction, nothing is
imaginary, everything is there in the scriptures. Unfortunate
thing is that we didnt to conceive it, we didn't have the ability
to understand it and therefore the acaryas come and reveal this
for our benefit. AS again Tamal Krishna goswami siad in the
class this morning that Prabhupada's report to the Goswami's in
the dream that the living entities in this world are totally
unqualified, they are not able to perform any austerities, they
are not able to understansd the scriptures, they are completely
useless but they have one quality, that they are surrendered to
me. And this is the most important qualification. Our surrender
to a pure devotee. If we become surrendered to a pure devotee,
then the transcendental knowledhe will be revealed in our hearts
and to the degree we are surrendered, to that extent the
knowledge will be revealed in our hearts. In the beginning of
Mahabharat there are the stgories of Uddhala and Aruni. It is
very saignificant that these anetdotes are mentioned right at the
very beginning of Mahabharat and that was pointing out gurubhakti. The surrender to the spsiritual master. And this is an
indication that if you want to understand Mahabharat then you
must become surrendered to a bona fide spiritual master. If you
want to enter of scriptures, then you must become surrendered to
the devotees of the Lord, to the self realized souls that God
realized souls. And the story of Aruni is that Aruni's spiritual
master Doma he got the news that the water was entering into the
fields so he told Aruni 'Aruni you go and stop the water'. Aruni
went adn he saw that there was a flood and the wall had broken.
In India they make a wall about 12 15 inches high walls made of
clay because the paddy field constantly needs water. That wall
broke and the water was gusshing out and there was not way that
he could actually prevent it. He tried to stop it and he could
not then finally he just laid down and with his own body he
stopped the water from coming into the field because his spritual
master told him to stop the water. ANd then it was night and
Doma enquired where is Aruni? The other students told him that
Aruni didn't return, you sent him to the field and he didn't
return as yet. So Doma immediately said OK lets go to the field
and see what has happened to Aruni. He went to the field, it was
dark and he couldn't see. He was calling out Aruni where are
you? and Aruni replied Oh Spiritual master I am here. But Doma
said where are you I cannot see you. Aruni replied I am lying on
the field to prevent the water from coming in. The wall broke
and there was no way I could stop it. So then Doma went to him
he was so pleased that he just blessed him let all the vedas, all
the four Vedas and all the scripotures be revealed in your heart.
And the transcendental knowledge was revealed in the heart of
Aruni due to the blessing of Doma. The understanding is divja
jnana ridha praksi, the transcendental knowledge is revealed in
the heart. Medhia....this transcendental knowledge cannot be
received by our intelligence memeory or great studies.
Naya....struhe....only one whom received the mercy of a devotee,
he receives this transcendental knowledge. To go back to today's
chapter.....

The third chapter is entitled as Beyond Material Nature. In
sanskrit prapchanrita. Prapa means material nature which is com
posed of five elements and beyond this amterial nature is the
spiritual nature. The first personality that Narada approached
was Lord Siva. Thereafter Narada went to Sivaloka and from a
distant saw that Siva was absorbed in worshipping Lord
Sankarsana. HE was chanting His glories and dancing in ecstasy.
There is a very nice description Lord Siva was dancing in ecstasy
and Parvati was clapping, she was keeping the beat. And also it
is described that when Lord Siva dances he keeps the beat with
his damaru, Lord Siva has an instrument that looks somewhat like
a mrdunga in an inverse order. The mrdunga is swollen in the
middle by the damaru concaves in the middle, it tapers in the
center whereas the mrdunga tapers towards the ends. The damaru
has two sides also with animal skin and it has a heavy weight
strung with (drawing on board) .... a string so he just shakes
it a it keeps the beat in that way. We have to also remember
that music came from Lord Siva. Music has a few gurus, the
intial originators and one of them is Lord Siva and another one
is Narada Muni. They are the original exponents of music and are
great musicians. Lord Siva is a very great musician. And we can
see why they are great musicians, because they sing the glories
of the SPG. So Lord Siva was dancing and Paravati was keeping
the beat and his associates were dancing and also saying 'All
glory, all glory to Lord Siva". Narada Muni started to sing the
glory of Lord Siva as he had heard from his father Brahma. He
tried to take the dust from Lord Siva's lotus feet and when he
did that Lord Siva stopped him. He said 'Hey Narada, what are
you doing?' and he embraced him. Then when Siva heard how Narada
was glorifying him then he felt very ashanmed and he covered his
ears with his hands and said to Narada, 'Narada what are you
talking about, what happened to you?' and then he actually
covered Narada's mouth and said 'Narada, stop this nonsense'.
Actually he told Narada he simply wants to receive the mercy of
the servant of the servant of the servant. This is how Lord Siva
refused to hear any glorification of himself as a devotee.
Narada Muni then felt guilty and then started to describe him as
the one who knows the transcendental glories of the Lord. So
Narada tries to justify why he was glorifying becasue Lord Siva
knows Krsna's `glories and he can reveal them to others. That's
why Lord Siva's position is so elevated. He is so dear to krsna
that many times Krsna worshipped him with great respect and
accepted boons from him. There is alos one mention of Lord siva
once actually wanted to have a benediction from Lord Krsna that
Krsna wanted to give him a benediction and Lord Siva wanted the
benediction that give me the benediction that my position will be
greater than yours. So Krsna granted the benediction and later
on Siva told that to Narada and said 'See how envious I am. How
proud I am. You are telling me how zI am a devotee but a devotee
is naturally free from ency and pride. But I am the source of
ahankara, I am the source of false ego so how can you consider me
to be a devotee.' Actually the false ego comes from Lord Siva so
he is saying how can you say I am a devotee. Narada Muni
jusitified that by saying that actually your desire to have a
position even higher than Krsna was simply to show this world
that by the Lord's mercy Krsna allows the devotee to be in a
superior position than Himself. Aradana.....of all the worship,
the worship of Visnu is the greatest, but mat.....but even higher
than that is the worship oif the devotees of the Lord. Lord Siva
is telling Parvati. Why? BEcause Krsna is so fond odf His
devotees that when a devotee becomes pleased upon somebody....

change over in tape

then Lord Siva covered Narada's`face and said 'Please don't
remind me of those shameful incidencies. Whenever I think of
them I feel so embarressed that I behaved in such an obnoxious
way with the Lord.' Because sometimes Lord Siva forgot that
Krsna is the Supreme Lord and when Krsna fought with his Siva's
devotees, then Siva sided with his devotees and fought against
Krsna. ANd when Krsna defeated him and brought him back to his
senses then Siva felt very embarressed. That is why Siva is
saying please do not rfemind me of those incidences. Narada Muni
said you are very dear to Krsna therefore there is no room for
you to commit offense to Him. Although it may sometimes appear
that you committed offenses, Krsna never considered them to be
offenses. You thought they were offenses but Krsna never
considered them to be offenses because youa re so dear to Krsna.
In this way Krsna does not accept offenses of His devotees. It
is according to vidhi marg one should not touch the Deity with
his feet. Is there anyone who would dare to touch Krsna with his
feet in the temple room? Never. ANd actually this offense is so
grevious that one may be completely doomed to extinction becaue
of this offense but in Vrndavana the cowherd boys are climbing on
Krsna's back. What about their offense? Krsna does not accept
that offense because they are so dear to Him. ANother example
has been given, it is an offense to kick the mother in the chest
but a child when the child is sucking the mother's breast, she
kicks the mother in the chest. Does the mother take offense?
No. Actually love nullifies all offense. Krsna has such love
for Siva and Siva has such intense love for Krsna that there is
no room for offense and that is why Brahma pointed out that Lord
Siva's position is higher than his own position. Then although
you gave boons to offenders of Vaisnavas, there were some
loopholes in those boons. By Krsna's mercy there were some
loopholes in those boons and examples are given of Kalayavana and
Jaidrath. These two personalities received boons from Lord Siva.
Kalayavana was the son of Gargarisi and Garga to have a very
powerful son, for twelve years he ate only iron dust. And as a
result of that he gave birth to Kalayavana by Siva's blessings.
And Kalayavana became very powerful and he also got a boon from
Siva that he would be invincible by the Yadhavas, he could not be
killed by the Yadhavas because the yadhavas were the most
powerful at the time. So even Krsna would not be able to kill
him. So Jarashandha got to know about that and Jarashandha sent
Kalayavana to fight against Krsna and so when kalayavana attacked
Krsna's kingdom, Krsna ran as if He was fleeing. Therefore
another name of Krsna is Ranchorji. He left the battlefield out
of fear of Kalayavana. Krsna ran and kalayavana chased Him then
krsna entered the mountain cave where Muchikunda was meditating
for so many years. Muchikanda was a great age and he was
sleeping. So Kalayavana came inside the cave and it was all dark
and he bumped into Muchikunda and he thought it was Krsna so he
kicked him. And Muchikunda woke up and just looked at Kalayavana
and he weas burnt to ashes. So that was the loophole in the boon
that he received from Siva. About Jayadrath he was the son of
Vritddakshakra and Jayadrath also received a boon from Siva that
he woulod be able to defeat all the Pandavas except Arjuna one
day during the battle of Kuruksetra. OK some that I will come to
later. So Abhimanu when he entered into the army phalanx the
understanding was that Abhimanu would make the way this
chakrabuha noone knew how to go in and come out, only Arjuna
knew but Arjuna was fighting with the seven arriors somewhere
else and was not available but this phalanx arranged by
Dronacarya was destroying the Pandava army. How to undo the
phalanx. So Abhimanu revealed that he knew how to enter the
phalanx but he didn't knopw how to come out. BEcause when he was
in his mother's womb, Subhadra's womb, Arjuna was telling her how
to enter into the chakraabudha. This is how ksatriya ladies are
also very powerful ladies. Subhadra was listening and Abhumanu
listened ion Subhadra's womb. But then Subhadra fell asleep.
WHen Arjuna was describing how to come out of the phalanx,
Subhadra fell asleep and that why Abhimanu knew how to enter into
the phalanx but not how to come out of the phalanx. Then the
other Pandavas told him you just break into the phalanx and we
will follow you and we will make way also to come out. But on
Duryadona's side he remembered that Yajadrath had this boon that
for one day he would be able to defeat all the four Pandavas
excepting Arjuna. So they posted Jayadrath on the gate on the
door of the phalanx and told him to prevent the Pandavas from
coming in. But Arjuna by the arrangement was driven away so he
could not come in. Other warriors engaged him in a fight and he
could not leave them. As soon as Abhimanu entered, they closed
the mouth out the phalanx and Jayadrath stopped the four
Pandavas. But due to Lord Sivas blessings the Pandavas could not
defeat him that day and that day the seven maharatis killed
Abhimanu. Karna, Drona, etc. And he was actually killed
unarmed. He did not have any weapons. They cut his bows, cut
his sword and finally he was even fighting with a wheel and even
just with a wheel he was invincible so then they cut the wheel
also with their arrows and then when he was unarmed then Dusashan
came and smashed his head with his mace. So Arjuna took a vow
that he would kill Jayadrath by the end of the day, the next day.
He took a vow that he would either kill jayadrath or he would
enter into fire. Then the Kuruvas became very excited. They
said now we got Arjuna. They said if we can just prtoect
Jayadrath for a day then Arjuna is gone. And they did that.
They arranged a phalanx that is called suchimuk the head of a
needdle. There was a chakrabuha and inside there was a sucimuka
and it was actually impossibvle to approach Jayadratha becasue
all the big warriors were protecting him through this very
special arrangement of phalanxs. It was almost evening and
Arjuna couldnt kill Jayadratha. Arjuna couldn't even come
anywhere near him. But at that time Krsna He sent His
sudharshana and covered the sun with His disc and everyone
thought that the sun set and they became very jubilant that now
Arjuna is dead because Jayadratha weas saved and the sun already
had set. And then as soon as everyone became unaware or
inattentive then the disc was removed and all of a sudden the sun
shone forth brightly and then Arjuna shot his arrow and his arrow
beheaded Jayadrath. Krsna also reminded Arjuna that at the time
fo jaydratha's birth, there was an announcement from the sky that
this son would die in a battlefield. So his father Bridadaksa he
actually gave the curse at that time that whoever would be the
cause of the fall of his head on the ground, his head would split
into a thousand pieces. So Arjuna was reminded of that problem
by Krsna so Arjuna shot another arrow which picked up that head
and carried it all the way to where his father was performing
austerities in Koshal The arrow carried the head all the way to
where he was meditating and he dropped the head on his lap. And
he became very alarmed seeing someone's head on his lap like that
so he immediately stood up and the head fell on the ground and
immediately his head split into a thousand pieces.

OK so I will quickly go through the next points. Lord Siva
pointed out that actually the residents of Vaik are the greatest
devotees of Krsna and in this way he started to glorify ther
esidents of Vaikuntha. Then PArvati reminded that of all the
residents of Vaikuntha that Laxmi Devi is the greatest devotee,
she is the greatest recipient of Krsna's mercy. Because she is
(reads out points) . Then hearing that when NArada Muni was
about to go to Vaikuntha Siva reminded him even greater a devotee
than the residents of Vaikuntha is Prahlada Maharaj. Because
Krsna announced that of all of His devotees, Prahlada is the
best. (reads out points) So prahlada is the greatest devotee
and Siva Narada to go to Sutaloka and meet Prahlada Maharaj.

QUESTIONS:

QUestion: Maharaj how is it that all these great devotees arent
aware who is the greatest reciepeient of krsna's emrcy?

Answer: Not all the great devotees, but many great devotyees are
not aware. But manyn others are aware of Radharani's supreme
positon. Ther eason is that the reside3nts of Vaikuntha are not
given that understanding. The real knowledge of Vrndvana is kept
as a secret from the residents of Vaikuntha. What to speak of
the resdients ofg this earth planet. Their understanding that
the SPG is Visnu, NAryana and Krsna is an expansion, Krsna is an
avatara of Visnu. They are not given the highest understanding
because unless one becomes specially qualified one is not allowed
to enter into the inner part of krsna's redidence, that is
Vrndavana.

Question: Maharaj, I am wondering about the worshippers of Lord
Siva. Can they just be libverasted to Vaikuntha through Lord
Siva?
܌
Answer; You see those who worship Siva without worshipping
narayana they are known as pashandis or pakandundiks. It means
the worst of all atheists. If you approach Siva without Narayana
then he is an atheirst, he is a demon. But those who worship
Siva knowing him that he is a great devotee of Narayana, they get
enterance or liberation to Vaikuntha. Not others

Hamsadhutta `Prabhu: WE see that everyone thinks that their
particular scripture has the end all and be all ....so if someone
argues that we have Bhagavatam, we have Caritamrta so you say
this is the end all and be all. Perhaps there is something else.
How do youn reply to that?

Answer: For most qualification to appraoch the scriptuires is
that they must have a bona fide spiritual master. In Manusamhita
it is said that if a sudhra reads the scriptures, then molten
lead should be poured into his ears. It is a heavy statement
apparently but what does it actually mean? It measn that janmana
..sudrah, by birth everyone is a sudhra. But ..... by proper
purificatory process one becomes twice born and what is the
purificatory process? Approaching a bona fide spiritual amster
and go through the upaniyan samskara. One must satudy the
scriputes under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual amster.
But then again there are different types of spiritual masters.
The Vedas have two different aspects. One is the demoniac aspect
of the Vedas and the other is the devotional aspect of the Vedas.
The enjoying or exploiting aspect of the vedas is given by
Sukracarya to the demons. Whereas the devotional aspect has been
given to the demigods by Brhaspati. You have two sides. The
demons are also using the Vedas. Then are also two types of
gurus but those gurus are like the musical guru, who teaches
music. Actully most gurus are music gurus, dance gurus, football
gurus. Those who give some mundane knowledge but the guru who
gives spiritual knowledge must be a devotee of Krsna.....That
ultimate consideration of a bona fide spiritual master is that he
be conversant with Krsna consciousness.

Hmasadhutta Prabhu: But my question is a person who we are
preaching to in a university and they throw this question.

Answer: I will approach this question in two ways. Had it been
during the time of Manu, or before the time of kali yugas we
would have said pour lead in his ears. But in this age
Prabhupada said that the ninth offense to the holy name is not so
important. We are taking a chance to preach Krsna consciousness.
Maybe there will be some who will not have the faith but then
also we can tell them that in order to study any subject you have
to have a teacher. You can't study physics without a teacher.
You may ask why the physics teacher is saying that this book is
the book you must study. So first of all you have to accept a
teacher. So if you want to study the spiritual science, so you
accept a teach and whatever books the teacher the teacher
prescribes Siva Purana, OK go ahead and read it. WE don't have
any objection. Or ig he says to read the Bible, fine we don't
have any objection. All the scriptures are bona fide but they
have to be revealed then they are bona fide, not otherwise.

Acitya Govinda Prabhu: I wanted to ask a question about Lord
Siva. You were mentioning about the followers being atheists.
In Srimad Bhagavatam there it describes how they got a curse for
this.

Answer: Yes. At the time of Daksa jayna there was a curse given
to the followers of Siva that they would become atheists and a
countercurse was given to the brahamanas would become the blind
followers of rituals.
